The Core Fighter II is a high-performance fighter plane which doubles as the Gundam GP01's core section. Like the Core Fighter of the original RX-78 Gundam, it provides the mobile suit's pilot with an emergency escape route. While the classic Core Fighter incorporated little more than the mobile suit's cockpit and avionics, the Core Fighter II also contains the Gundam GP01's generator and main thrusters. As a result, the GP01 can be reconfigured for ground or space combat simply by swapping in a different type of Core Fighter.
