This mobile suit is one of several prototypes designed by Anaheim Electronics, based on the legendary RX-78 Gundam. The GP01 is a highly agile general-purpose model which can be adapted for both space and ground combat. Its core block system allows the cockpit and main engines to eject in the form of a fighter plane, preserving the pilot's life and vital combat data. In U.C. 0083 the GP01 is transferred to the Federation's Torrington base in Australia for testing under Earth's gravity, and is soon used in battle against the renegade soldiers of the Delaz Fleet.
