Thanks to the stunning effectiveness of the RX-78 Gundam, the Earth Federation chose to devote its manufacturing power to the Gundam's mass-produced version, the RGM-79 GM. However, the success of the RX-77 Guncannon also indicated the value of cannon-equipped support mobile suits. At first this role was filled by modified versions of the GM, but by the end of the war the Federation has begun trial production of a true mass-produced version of the Guncannon. The sad fate of the two units stationed aboard the carrier Gray Phantom ultimately leads to the abandonment of this program.
