| Ablative Gel |
 |
A special heat-absorbing gel which the
Earth Alliance
warship
Archangel
uses to protect itself from the heat of atmospheric entry. This substance evaporates away as the ship descends, so it must be continually replenished by the gel dischargers on the underside of the hull. |
| Anti-Armor Penetrator |
 |
A special weapon carried by the
Dagger L
and
Windam.
The Stiletto rocket-propelled anti-armor penetrator is an explosive device shaped like a throwing knife, which uses small vernier rockets to propel itself towards its target. These weapons are stored in the
mobile suit's
hip armor in the same fashion as the
Armor Schneider
assault knives used by the
Strike Gundam. |
| Anti-Beam Coating |
|
While the
Phase Shift Armor
used by the prototype
Gundams
is highly effective against missiles and projectiles, it's useless against beam attacks. To address this vulnerability, most of the Gundams carry protective shields whose anti-beam coating can withstand direct hits from high-energy beam weapons. A similar technology is used in the hull armor of
ZAFT's
space warships. |
| Anti-Beam Depth Charge |
|
A defensive device which can be fired from the multipurpose launchers distributed around the hull of the
Archangel
and other space warships. These so-called depth charges detonate between the ship itself and the enemy vessels, creating a cloud of beam-absorbing particles which temporarily decrease the energy of incoming beams. However, the particles have the same effect on the beam weapons of the ship which deployed the depth charges, so these devices aren't appropriate for all tactical situations. |
| Armor Schneider |
|
A small assault knife used by the
Strike Gundam.
While nowhere near as effective as the beam weapons with which its
Aile Strike
and
Sword Strike
configurations are equipped, the Armor Schneiders are still capable of piercing the armor of a standard
mobile suit,
and unlike beam weapons they don't deplete the Gundam's energy battery. These knives fold up like switchblades for storage in the Strike Gundam's hip armor. |
| Assault Shroud |
|
A set of optional equipment which wraps around the exterior of a
mobile suit.
Originally developed as an option for the
GINN
and
CGUE,
this concept is applied to create a similar set of accessories for the
Duel Gundam
after its capture by the
ZAFT
forces. Although the assault shroud provides the mobile suit with an extra layer of armor, its chief function is to increase its firepower and space mobility. The extra weight, however, renders the mobile suit relatively slow and clumsy when operating in Earth's gravity. |
Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) |
|
A supplemental generator which is used to activate
mobile suits
and other vehicles prior to launch. |
| Beam Rifle |
|
A compact, powerful beam weapon used by the
Atlantic Federation's
prototype
Gundams.
Its beam blasts are effective even against
Phase Shift Armor,
but repeated use will quickly drain the
mobile suit's
energy battery. |
| Beam Saber |
|
A new kind of melee weapon first employed by the
Earth Alliance's
prototype
Gundams.
The blade of the beam saber is formed using the same magnetic field generation technology that holds the
Blitz Gundam's
Mirage Colloid
in place. After capturing four of the five prototype Gundams,
ZAFT
quickly duplicates the Alliance's beam saber technology and begins equipping its own
mobile suits
with these weapons as well. |
| Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) |
|
A defensive system made up of one or more rapid-fire machine guns which can be used to shoot down incoming missiles and aircraft at short range. This term is usually abbreviated as CIWS, pronounced "see-whiz." While the
Earth Alliance
and the
Orb Union
use the 75mm Igelstellung as their standard CIWS, the
ZAFT
forces employ a variety of different machine guns for this purpose, including the MMI-GAU2 Picus, the MMI-GAU1 Sagittus, and retractable 58mm machine gun turrets.
After the first war between Earth and the
PLANTs,
new types of CIWS are introduced which use smaller shells in exchange for a higher rate of fire. The Earth Alliance and Orb Union standardize on 12.5mm systems, while ZAFT uses 12.5mm and 20mm systems for its
mobile suits
and 40mm systems in its newest warships.
|
| Cyclops System |
|
A weapon of mass destruction developed by the
Earth Alliance
forces. The Cyclops System consists of a huge array of dish-shaped microwave emitters, whose radiation destroys all living things within the system's effective radius. The ubiquitous
N-Jammer,
which blocks the transmission of radio waves, also restricts microwaves to a distance of a few kilometers. The microwaves are thus confined within a relatively small area, dramatically increasing the intensity of the radiation. Once activated, the Cyclops System rapidly heats the water that makes up about 60% of the human body, as well as the propellant and ammunition supplies of
mobile suits.
Ultimately the intense radiation heat will destroy even buildings and the array itself.
On June 2, C.E. 70, the Alliance used a Cyclops System installed beneath their supply base in the moon's
Endymion Crater
to destroy the base, taking with it both
ZAFT
and Alliance forces. |
| Deuterion Beam Energy Transmission System |
|
A new power system installed in
ZAFT's
Second Stage series
of
mobile suits
and the newly constructed warship
Minerva.
This system allows the battery of a mobile suit to be recharged by a deuterion beam emitted by its mothership, giving it an effectively unrestricted operating time. |
Disconnected Rapid Armament Group Overlook Operation Network System (DRAGOON System) |
|
A unique feature of the
Providence Gundam,
the DRAGOON System consists of eleven independent beam emitters which can be coordinated to attack targets from several directions at once. While similar in concept to the
wired gunbarrels
used by the
Moebius Zero,
the DRAGOON units are controlled via wireless quantum communication, which is immune to the disruptive effects of
N-Jammers.
Using this system requires superhuman powers of spatial awareness, which are extremely rare among
Naturals
and
Coordinators
alike. |
| Fatum-00 |
|
An aerial
flight support unit
which is attached to the back of the
Justice Gundam.
It also serves as a weapons platform, and is armed with a variety of beam cannons and machine guns. In its flyer mode, the Fatum-00 is mounted horizontally on the Justice's shoulders so that its weapons fire forward, and in its lifter mode it detaches to become a remote-controlled flying platform similar to the
Guul. |
| Flare Motor |
|
A device used to move massive objects. Flare motors produce thrust by generating magnetic fields that interact with the particle radiation of solar flares. These devices are too large to be installed in spaceships, and are used mainly for moving asteroids or huge objects such as the remains of
Junius Seven. |
| Flight Unit |
|
Although most
mobile suits
are unable to fly for long distances in Earth's atmosphere, they can be equipped with external devices to make them capable of extended atmospheric flight. These flight units also serve to increase the mobile suit's performance in space. The backpack of the
M1 Astray,
inspired by the
Strike Gundam's
Aile Striker
pack, is one such device, and the
Justice Gundam
and
Forbidden Gundam
are also equipped with specialized flight units. |
Gamma Emission by Nuclear Explosion Stimulate Inducing System (GENESIS) |
|
A giant gamma-ray laser cannon which serves as
ZAFT's
ultimate weapon. GENESIS is powered by nuclear explosions, which are made possible by
N-Jammer Canceler
technology. The burst of gamma radiation created by the explosion is directed towards an external alignment mirror, then reflected back onto the weapon's main section, where a secondary mirror turns it into a coherent laser beam. The alignment mirror block, which lies in the beam's path, is reduced to radioactive scrap and must be replaced before the weapon can be fired again. The entire system is protected by
Phase Shift Armor,
and
Mirage Colloid
technology is used to conceal its presence until ZAFT is ready to unveil it.
Despite its immense destructive power, GENESIS wasn't originally meant to be used as a weapon. Its original purpose was to deliver energy to the solar sails of interstellar spacecraft, making possible the exploration of other solar systems. When the system was redesigned for military use, it was adapted to emit gamma rays, a form of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation which can permeate solid matter and break down molecular structures. Although gamma rays themselves are invisible to the naked eye, the interplanetary gas which lies along GENESIS's firing path emits light as its atoms are excited by the intense radiation. |
| Geschmeidig Panzer |
|
A unique feature of the
Forbidden Gundam.
This energy-deflection armor consists of a pair of shields, connected via flexible arms to the flight unit on the Forbidden's back, which can repel and redirect enemy beam attacks. This is made possible by a colloid gas, similar to the
Blitz Gundam's
Mirage Colloid,
composed of special beam-deflecting particles. This colloid gas is held in place by the powerful magnetic fields generated by the Forbidden Gundam's shields. |
| Gun-Launcher |
|
A projectile weapon akin to a
railgun
or
linear gun,
which uses electromagnetic forces rather than gunpowder to launch its projectiles. In addition to solid shells, the gun-launcher can also fire specialized munitions such as armor-piercing and high explosive rounds. The
Buster Gundam
and the
Launcher Strike Gundam
are among the
mobile suits
equipped with this type of weapon. |
| Gungnir System |
|
A weapon that generates a powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP) in order to disrupt and destroy electronic circuitry, while leaving living creatures unharmed. The exceptionally strong pulse produced by the implosion of a Gungnir device is powerful enough to overwhelm the EMP shielding used by the
Earth Alliance
forces.
ZAFT
uses this system in its attack on the Alliance's
Panama
spaceport, dropping more than a dozen of the generator devices from orbit.
The Gungnir System is named after the spear carried by the god Odin in Norse mythology, which represented the natural phenomenon of lightning. |
High Mobility Aerial Tactics Mode (HiMAT Mode) |
|
The atmospheric flight configuration of the
Freedom Gundam,
in which its wings are unfolded for higher maneuverability. The Freedom Gundam is capable of flight even in its normal mode, but this form is better suited for aerial dogfighting. |
| Hyper Impulse Cannon |
|
A devastatingly powerful beam cannon with output comparable to that of a warship's main guns, which is used by the
Buster Gundam
and
Launcher Strike Gundam. |
| Igelstellung |
|
A computer-controlled multi-barrel vulcan gun, which is installed in the heads of the
Atlantic Federation's
prototype
Gundams
and in rotating turrets on the hulls of
Earth Alliance
warships. The Igelstellung is a Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) designed for shooting down missiles and aircraft at short ranges, but it can also be used against infantry and other ground targets, or employed as a defensive weapon against enemy
mobile suits.
Thanks to their high-performance fire control systems, these Igelstellungs can locate, track, and fire upon their targets fully automatically, and the automatic targeting system can also be disengaged so that human operators can control the Igelstellungs manually. |
| Laminated Armor |
|
The outer hull of the
Earth Alliance
warship
Archangel
is made up of a single piece of laminated armor, which protects the ship from beam weapon attacks by dissipating their energy across the entire surface of the ship. This enables the ship to survive several direct hits from beam weapons, but because the beam energy is converted to heat, the armor can be fatally damaged when the accumulated energy overloads the ship's heat management systems. |
| Laser Designator |
|
A targeting device which illuminates its target with a low-power laser beam, whose reflected light can then be used for precision aiming and for bomb and missile guidance. All
ZAFT
and
Earth Alliance
warships are equipped with laser designators, and they can use laser designator data from smaller vehicles to target their own weapons. |
| Linear Catapult |
|
A device used to launch
mobile suits
and
mobile armors
into battle. The linear catapult consists of a pair of rails between which a powerful magnetic field is generated, and this field is then used to accelerate machines away from their mothership. The rails can be retracted when not in use, conserving space and eliminating the need to maintain a dedicated runway area. |
| Linear Gun |
|
A weapon which, like a
railgun,
uses electromagnetic forces rather than gunpowder to fire its projectiles. However, the conductive projectiles fired from a linear gun don't come into physical contact with the firing mechanism, and are instead accelerated using attractive and repulsive magnetic forces, as in a so-called magnetic levitation (maglev) train. Although the acceleration produced is relatively small compared to that of a railgun, a linear gun can yield similar muzzle velocities if its barrel is long enough, and the lack of physical contact eliminates friction heat and wear on the barrel.
Linear guns of this type are widely used by the
Earth Alliance
forces, and are the standard weapons of the Alliance's tanks and
Moebius
mobile armors.
The Valiant Mk.8 linear cannons installed in the Alliance warship
Archangel
are larger versions of this weapon. |
| Lohengrin Cannon |
|
The same
positron blaster cannon
used by the
Archangel
can also be installed in ground fortifications. Although the Lohengrin cannon has great destructive power, it also has severe negative effects on the environment, so great care must be taken in positioning and using it. One of these weapons is installed at the
Lohengrin Gate
that guards the city of
Gulnahan. |
| Lorenzini Sensor |
|
A specialized sensor used by underwater
mobile suits
such as the
GOOhN,
ZnO,
and
GINN WASP Type
to detect electrical impulses in the surrounding water. This system is modeled on the electroreceptor organs possessed by sharks, which are known as the Ampullae of Lorenzini. |
| Mass Driver |
|
A huge catapult that accelerates massive objects and hurls them into space. Although there are several methods for accomplishing this, the mass drivers of the
Cosmic Era
use electromagnetic forces to accelerate their payloads, making them essentially giant
railguns.
Designed for launching cargo rather than people, these devices subject their payloads to hundreds of gees of acceleration, enabling them to catapult objects into satellite orbit without the use of any additional propulsion systems. When a mass driver is used to send human beings into space, its acceleration must be limited to just two or three gees, forcing the passenger craft to use its own engines to reach full escape velocity. Thus, bulk cargo is usually launched in unmanned form, with humans traveling separately in small passenger craft.
Most of Earth's mass drivers are located near the equator, where the planet's rotation contributes almost 500 meters/second towards the required escape velocity. Major mass driver facilities include the
Kaohsiung
spaceport in Taiwan,
Porta Panama
in Central America,
Habilis
in eastern Africa, and the
Orb Union's
Kaguya
mass driver. After the launch of
ZAFT's
Operation Uroboros,
these mass drivers become major strategic targets, since they provide the only cost-effective means for sending large amounts of material and equipment into space. Because launching massive payloads at high velocities requires immense structural strength, these facilities are very time-consuming to construct and repair. |
| Metapolymer String |
|
A type of cable used for
space colony
construction, which is composed of intertwined fibers made from high-strength molecular compounds. The space warship
Kusanagi
becomes entangled by these drifting metapolymer strings in the vicinity of the
Mendel colony. |
| Meteor Breaker |
|
An engineering device designed for breaking up asteroids and comets. The Meteor Breaker contains a huge drill that tunnels into the target object and then automatically detonates at the appropriate depth, thus breaking the object apart from the inside. When the remains of
Junius Seven
begin falling toward Earth,
ZAFT
uses these devices in an attempt to break the remnants up before they enter the atmosphere. |
| Mirage Colloid |
|
A system installed in the
Blitz Gundam,
which renders the
mobile suit
invisible to both radar and the naked eye. The Mirage Colloid even blocks infra-red emissions, giving the Blitz perfect stealth capabilities. However, the mobile suit's
Phase Shift Armor
must be deactivated while this system is in use, so it becomes highly vulnerable while in its invisible form.
The Mirage Colloid itself is a particulate gas made up of microscopic prisms which absorb and refract light and radio waves, bending them around the outside of the mobile suit. This colloid is held in place by a powerful magnetic field, but it gradually dissipates over time, so the system's operating time is limited to 80 minutes.
After the first war between Earth and the
PLANTs,
all use of Mirage Colloid technology is prohibited by the
Junius Treaty.
However, organizations such as
Phantom Pain
continue to employ it despite the treaty's restrictions.
|
| Mobile Armor |
|
A type of one-man, general-purpose heavy fighter which serves as the standard combat vehicle of the
Earth Alliance
space forces. With heavy armor to withstand enemy attacks, enough firepower for a single machine to take out an enemy target, and aerial combat capabilities comparable to those of a conventional fighter, the mobile armor is designed to provide maximum effectiveness at a minimum cost in fighting strength - in other words, to minimize the loss of skilled personnel.
However, these machines have become hopelessly obsolete with the introduction of
ZAFT's
revolutionary
mobile suits.
The initial expectations of the Earth Alliance, that the combat strength of one ZAFT mobile suit would be equivalent to only two or three mobile armors, have proven to be dramatically wrong; in practice, it typically requires at least five of these machines to take down a single mobile suit.
After the first war between Earth and the
PLANTs,
the Earth Alliance introduces new types of mobile armor such as the
Zamza-Zah and Gells-Ghe
developed by
Adukurf Mechano-Industries.
Larger and more powerful than traditional mobile armors, and equipped with advanced technology such as
positron reflectors,
these monstrous mobile armors are formidable opponents for even the newest ZAFT mobile suits.
|
| Mobile Suit |
|
The standard weapon of the
ZAFT
forces, whose articulated limbs give it superb mobility and enable it to operate in a wide range of environments. While most mobile suits are humanoid in appearance, with manipulator hands for carrying optional weapons, ZAFT has also developed four-legged models for greater stability on the ground. Due to their complexity, these machines can initially be operated only by
Coordinators.
During the first war between Earth and the
PLANTs,
however, the
Earth Alliance
and
Orb Union
eventually develop highly automated operating systems that allow
Naturals
to pilot mobile suits.
Designed for use under the effects of the
N-Jammer,
mobile suits rely on energy batteries, rather than nuclear engines, for their power supply. As a result, they can only operate for limited periods before recharging, and they usually require logistical support from a spaceship, submarine carrier, or land battleship.
The earliest ancestors of the mobile suit were the working space suits, equipped with exoskeletons and auxiliary power systems, which were employed by
George Glenn
during his voyage to Jupiter aboard the exploration ship Tsiolkovsky. In C.E. 63, engineers in the PLANTs began secret research into the military applications of mobile suits. The first prototype was completed in C.E. 65, and two years later the first iteration of the mobile suit
GINN
entered production. |
| Mobile Weapon Pod |
|
A unique weapon used by the
Chaos Gundam.
Although they resemble the
wired gunbarrels
used by the
Moebius Zero,
these mobile weapon pods are controlled via the same wireless quantum communication technology as the
DRAGOON System
introduced during the first war between Earth and the
PLANTs.
Thanks to technological improvements, these weapons can be operated even by pilots who lack exceptional powers of spatial awareness, but the high energy consumption of the quantum communication system means that the Chaos can only use them for a short period without a
deuterion beam recharge.
|
| Neutron Jammer (N-Jammer) |
|
A device which suppresses nuclear fission reactions by blocking the movement of free neutrons. Its effective range is so great that even a handful of these devices are sufficient to cover the entire Earth, nullifying all nuclear weapons and powerplants on the planet's surface. The N-Jammer also has the side effect of disrupting radio waves, thus rendering radar and conventional communications useless, and for this reason space warships are equipped with these devices as an electronic countermeasure.
The N-Jammer was originally developed in the
PLANTs
under the supervision of
Supreme Council
member Orson White. These devices were first employed in the battle for the space station
Yggdrasil
on February 22, C.E. 70, and on April 1 of that year the
ZAFT
forces drove countless N-Jammers into Earth's surface as the first phase of their
Operation Uroboros
campaign. The nations of Earth, which had hitherto depended on nuclear fission as their primary power source, were plunged into a
severe energy crisis
as a result. |
| Neutron Jammer Canceler (N-Jammer Canceler) |
|
A device that negates the effects of the
N-Jammer,
making possible the use of nuclear weapons and powerplants. Developed by the
PLANTs,
this technology has remained a top secret even among the
ZAFT
forces, lest it fall into the hands of the
Earth Alliance.
While the range of the N-Jammer is sufficient for a few of these devices to cover the entire Earth, the N-Jammer Canceler's area of effect is far smaller, and the effective ranges of the systems installed in the
Freedom
and
Justice
Gundams are only large enough to accommodate the
mobile suits'
own reactors.
Thanks to their N-Jammer Cancelers and nuclear engines, the Freedom and Justice Gundams have far greater power output than the previous generation of battery-powered mobile suits, as well as virtually unlimited operating time. N-Jammer Cancelers also permit the use of nuclear missiles, and of weapons of mass destruction such as the
GENESIS cannon
used in the second
Battle of Jachin Due.
After the first war between Earth and the PLANTs, the use of N-Jammer Cancelers in mobile suits and military weapons is prohibited by the
Junius Treaty.
Both sides thus return to the earlier battery technology, and ZAFT develops a new
deuterion beam energy transmission system
as an alternative means for extending the operating time of its mobile suits.
|
| Neutron Stampeder |
|
A device that remotely controls the movement of free neutrons to induce runaway nuclear fission reactions. The Neutron Stampeder causes the immediate detonation of any nuclear weapons within its area of effect, but it can only be used once because the quantum fresnels that make up its firing mechanism disintegrate during use, and it is effective only against enemies who are using nuclear technology.
ZAFT
uses a prototype version of the Neutron Stampeder, attached to a
Nazca-class warship,
to defend the
PLANTs
from a nuclear attack following the
Break The World
incident.
|
Phase Shift Armor (PS Armor) |
|
The most distinctive feature of the prototype
Gundams
developed by the
Atlantic Federation.
While active, this special armor nullifies all attacks by physical weapons, including blades, projectiles, and conventional explosives. However, it has no effect against beam and laser weapons, so most of the Gundams also carry shields treated with
anti-beam coating.
And because PS Armor consumes large amounts of energy, it cannot be used for extended periods lest it drain the
mobile suit's
energy battery.
PS Armor changes color upon activation. The Gundams which use this technology thus sport brilliant colors while in their Active Mode, and turn a dull gray when they switch to Deactive Mode. |
| Phonon Maser |
|
The standard energy weapon used by
ZAFT's
underwater
mobile suits.
A phonon maser is essentially the soundwave equivalent of a laser. Just as light is made up of electromagnetic oscillations whose peaks can be quantized into individual photons, soundwaves can be similarly quantized into so-called phonons. Like the photons emitted by a laser, the phonons emitted by the maser are all in phase and of the same frequency, creating a coherent beam which can deliver large amounts of energy to its target. |
| Plasma Booster |
|
A reusable external booster designed to help
Orb's
Izumo-class warships
launch into space. Once the vessel has reached the desired velocity, the plasma boosters then detach and return independently to Earth. The
Archangel,
which shares many design elements with the Izumo class, is able to use these devices when it launches into space from the territory of the
Orb Union. |
| Positron Blaster Cannon |
|
An energy weapon which fires a beam of positrons, the antimatter counterparts of electrons. When the positrons in the beam strike the electrons in the target, the particles annihilate each other in a burst of gamma rays. Thus, the positron blaster cannon literally disintegrates the matter of which its target is composed, and the resulting gamma ray radiation is also highly destructive.
The two Lohengrin cannons installed in the front "legs" of the
Earth Alliance
warship
Archangel
are weapons of this type, as is the Tannhauser cannon used by the
ZAFT
warship
Minerva.
Although these positron cannons charge relatively slowly, their destructive power is greater than that of any other weapons carried by these ships. |
| Positron Reflector |
|
A barrier system installed in
Earth Alliance
mobile armors
such as the
Zamza-Zah and Gells-Ghe
The field generated by the positron reflector can withstand even a direct hit from the
Minerva's
Tannhauser cannon, the most powerful weapon of
ZAFT's
newest warship, and it is effective against beam and projectile weapons alike. Since the Zamza-Zah's positron reflector is mounted on its upper surface, it must rotate into a reflection position in order to turn the barrier towards the incoming enemy attack.
|
| Positronic Interference |
|
A phenomenon used by the
Archangel
when it launches into space from the territory of the
Orb Union.
By firing its Lohengrin
positron blaster cannons,
the Archangel can create a conical shell of antimatter that surrounds the ship itself and insulates it from the atmosphere. Within this cocoon, the Archangel can then accelerate to escape velocity without the slowing effects of air resistance. However, this is strictly an emergency escape method, rather than a part of the Archangel's intended launch procedure. |
| Power Extender |
|
A device installed in the
Strike Rouge
which improves its energy storage capacity, allowing it to use its
Phase Shift Armor
for a longer duration than other
mobile suits. |
| Quantum Computer |
|
An advanced computer which uses the principles of quantum mechanics to dramatically boost its data-processing capabilities. This is the standard computer technology of the
Cosmic Era. |
| Railgun |
|
A weapon which uses electromagnetic forces, rather than gunpowder, to fire solid projectiles at very high velocities. A railgun consist of two conductive rails, to which an electrical current is applied, and a metal projectile which fits between them and completes the electrical circuit. The current flowing through the rails produces a powerful magnetic field, which interacts with the current running across the projectile to create an immense outward force that accelerates the projectile down the weapon's barrel.
Railguns of this type are installed in
ZAFT's
Nazca-class destroyers
and
Laurasia-class frigates,
and other examples include the 115mm Shiva railgun on the shoulder of the
Duel Gundam Assault Shroud
and the 450mm railguns on the back of the
BuCUE. |
| Scale System |
|
A propulsion system which uses the vibrations of tiny scales to move through water, sand, or loose soil. These scales are somewhat delicate, so the system cannot be used in the high-pressure environment of the deep sea, but unlike a conventional screw propeller it allows an underwater vehicle to move in any direction with equal ease. On the ground, this scale system allows
ZAFT's
land battleships to cruise through desert sands as if they were sailing through water. |
| Silhouette System |
|
Like the
Strike Gundam
developed by the
Earth Alliance,
the
Impulse Gundam
can adapt to different combat situations using specialized equipment modules known as Silhouettes. These modules are normally launched from the mothership using an unmanned Silhouette Flyer which tows the Silhouette to its destination, transfers it to the Impulse, and then detaches and returns automatically to the ship. The new
ZAFT
warship
Minerva
is equipped with a special array of hangars and catapults to store the Impulse and its Silhouettes and launch them into combat. |
| Spherical Breaker |
|
A unique close combat weapon used by the
Raider Gundam,
which consists of a spherical mace attached to a macromolecular wire. The sphere is composed of extremely dense material, making it massive enough to damage even
Phase Shift Armor.
Thanks to the
anti-beam coating
applied to the wire, the spherical breaker can also be swung rapidly to create a crude shield against enemy beam weapons. |
| Striker Pack |
|
The
Strike Gundam
can be equipped with a variety of specialized equipment modules, known as Striker packs, to adapt to different combat conditions. For example, the Strike Gundam can be fitted with the Aile Striker to form the
Aile Strike Gundam,
or the Sword Striker to form the
Sword Strike Gundam.
Since each Striker pack contains a backup energy battery, these modules can also be used to replenish the Gundam's power supply in mid-battle.
Although this system was omitted from the
Earth Alliance's
first mass production
mobile suits,
newer models such as the
Dagger L
and
Windam
can be equipped with a variety of Striker packs. The Jet Striker, which provides atmospheric flight capabilities, is now used by virtually all Alliance mobile suits on Earth.
|
Trans Phase Armor (TP Armor) |
|
A new armor technology used by the
Calamity,
Forbidden,
and
Raider
Gundams. This is an improved version of the earlier
Phase Shift Armor,
which provides similar protection against physical weapons along with significantly reduced power consumption.
Mobile suits
equipped with Trans Phase Armor do not change color when their armor is activated. |
| Umbrella of Artemis |
|
The lightwave defense barrier which protects the
Eurasian Federation's
Artemis
military base. This "umbrella" is impenetrable to physical and energy weapons alike, but the devices which form the barrier are activated only while enemy forces are in the area. |
Variable Phase Shift Armor (VPS Armor) |
|
An improved form of
Phase Shift Armor
used by the
Impulse Gundam
and the other
Second Stage
mobile suits.
Based on the technology used in the
Strike Rouge,
this Variable Phase Shift Armor provides greater energy efficiency than previous versions, and its strength and coloration can be changed to meet the needs of the mobile suit and its pilot. The Impulse Gundam uses this technology to change the color of its VPS Armor according to the requirements of its current
Silhouette pack. |
| Wired Gunbarrel |
|
A unique weapon system used by the
Moebius Zero
and
Exus,
which consists of four remote-controlled gun pods connected to the
mobile armor
by thin wires. The gunbarrels can be coordinated to surround enemy units and attack them from multiple directions simultaneously, but this complex system can be operated only by highly skilled pilots with exceptional powers of spatial awareness. |
| Wizard |
|
As with the
Strike Gundam
and
Impulse Gundam,
the
ZAKU Warrior
and
ZAKU Phantom
can be equipped with specialized backpacks to adapt to different combat situations. These backpacks are known as Wizards, and the types available include a
Gunner Wizard
for bombardment, a
Blaze Wizard
for high mobility, and a
Slash Wizard
for close combat. Unlike the Impulse, whose Silhouettes can be deployed and exchanged during battle, the ZAKU must be equipped with the appropriate Wizard before it launches into combat. |
