| Alaska |
 |
The location of
JOSH-A,
the central headquarters of the
Earth Alliance
forces as of C.E. 71. (See:
Heavens Base) |
| Aprilius One |
|
The first of the ten
PLANTs
which make up Aprilius City, and the meeting place of the
PLANT Supreme Council.
The PLANTs are divided into twelve cities named after the months of the Roman calendar, so Aprilius One corresponds to April 1 - the birthday of
George Glenn,
the first
Coordinator,
as well as the date on which PLANT Supreme Council elections are held. |
| Armory One |
|
A new
PLANT
constructed after the end of the first war between Earth and the PLANTs. Armory One is located at
Lagrange point
4, far from the PLANT homeland, and serves as a military arsenal for the
ZAFT
forces. |
| Artemis |
|
An asteroid fortress controlled by the
Eurasian Federation,
a member of the
Earth Alliance.
Located at
Lagrange point
3, a point in Earth orbit directly opposite the moon, Artemis is considered a backwater base of little strategic value. The asteroid is protected by the impenetrable
"Umbrella of Artemis,"
a lightwave defense barrier which is impervious to physical and energy weapons alike. |
| Arzachel Lunar Base |
|
An
Earth Alliance
base located in the Arzachel Crater on the near side of the moon. After the destruction of the
Ptolemaeus Lunar Base
during the first war between Earth and the
PLANTs,
the Arzachel Base becomes the Alliance's main lunar stronghold and a staging point for attacks on the PLANT homeland. |
| Banadiya |
|
A large city in northern Africa which serves as the base of operations for
Andrew Waltfeld,
ZAFT's
dreaded
Desert Tiger,
and as the headquarters of his land battleship Lesseps. |
| Boaz |
|
One of the two space fortresses that guard the
PLANT
homeland. Originally controlled by the
Republic of East Asia,
who gave it the name
Nova,
this asteroid was placed in Earth orbit at
Lagrange point
4 so that it could be used as a resource mine. After Nova was captured by
ZAFT
on July 12, C.E. 70, it was transferred to the PLANT homeland at Lagrange point 5 and converted into the military base known as Boaz.
The name Boaz is borrowed from one of the two pillars of Solomon's temple. |
| Carpentaria Base |
|
A
ZAFT
base located in the Gulf of Carpentaria on the northern coast of Australia, a continent controlled by the
PLANT-aligned
Oceania Union.
The base's disassembled components were dropped from orbit on April 2, C.E. 70, and with 48 hours the foundations of ZAFT's first terrestrial stronghold had already been laid. The construction of the base was completed on May 20, whereupon the ZAFT forces began using it as staging area for attacks on the rest of the Earth.
During the first war between Earth and the PLANTs, the Earth Alliance launches an invasion of the Oceania Union in order to capture the Carpentaria Base, but Oceania's national boundaries are later restored by the
Junius Treaty.
When the new conflict begins, the Carpentaria Base once again becomes a major ZAFT stronghold, and large numbers of reinforcements are deployed here during
Operation Spear of Twilight.
|
| Copernicus |
|
The first lunar city, and the site of the preparatory school where
Kira Yamato
and
Athrun Zala
met as children. The construction of Copernicus began in C.E. 10, in order to provide a source of raw materials for the
space colony
program, and the city was opened to civilian inhabitants two years later. Kira and Athrun met here in C.E. 61, but Athrun was summoned back to the
PLANTs
in C.E. 68, and the Yamato family left Copernicus and moved to the resource satellite Heliopolis that same year.
At the start of C.E. 70, with war between Earth and the PLANTs seeming all but inevitable, the United Nations chose Copernicus as the site of a final round of peace negotiations. However, on February 5 of that year, the negotiations were disrupted by a terror bombing. The Tragedy of Copernicus claimed the lives of the sponsor nations' representatives and wiped out the senior leadership of the United Nations, and PLANT representative
Siegel Clyne
escaped only because his arrival had been delayed by a shuttle malfunction. This catastrophe, which the sponsor nations blamed on the PLANTs, was the final trigger that escalated the dispute into all-out war. |
| Debris Belt |
|
After many years of space exploration and development, countless discarded satellites, empty propellant tanks, wrecked spacecraft, and other junk have accumulated in Earth orbit to form a huge ring of space debris. This Debris Belt is inherently unstable, and over the years its contents will gradually spiral inwards under the influence of Earth's gravity and fall onto the planet's surface. |
| Endymion Crater |
|
A crater on the near side of the moon. Once the location of a major
Earth Alliance
resource base, this became the site of the
Grimaldi Front's
final battle on June 2, C.E. 70. |
| Gibraltar |
|
A land formation at the southern tip of modern-day Spain, where the Mediterranean Sea opens onto the Atlantic Ocean. Historically used as a military fortress, this is now the location of a major
ZAFT
base. Gibraltar was captured by ZAFT forces on May 25, C.E. 70, following
a major naval battle off the coast of Casablanca,
and subsequently became the main staging area for ZAFT's operations in Europe and northern Africa.
During the first war between Earth and the
PLANTs,
the
Earth Alliance
eventually captures this base in the second
Casablanca Sea Battle.
However, Gibraltar once again becomes a ZAFT stronghold as the new conflict begins, and large numbers of reinforcements are deployed here during
Operation Spear of Twilight.
|
| Grimaldi Crater |
|
A crater on the near side of the moon. Earlier in the war, the Grimaldi Crater marked the dividing line between
ZAFT
and
Earth Alliance
territory, and the lunar frontline was thus referred to as the
Grimaldi Front. |
| Gulnahan |
|
A Middle Eastern city located on the south shore of the Caspian Sea, which is also the site of a large powerplant. The
Earth Alliance
forces have occupied Gulnahan as a bridgehead to maintain control of Eurasia, and they have constructed a fortification known as the
Lohengrin Gate
to guard the valley that leads to the city itself. However, the local population strongly opposes the Earth Alliance occupation, and has formed a resistance movement. |
| Heavens Base |
|
An
Earth Alliance
military base located in Iceland. Following the destruction of
JOSH-A
during the first war between Earth and the
PLANTs,
Heavens Base becomes the main headquarters of the Earth Alliance forces. |
| Heliopolis |
|
A resource satellite located at
Lagrange point
3, and controlled by the
Orb Union,
one of Earth's neutral nations. Heliopolis uses a traditional "Island 3"
space colony
design, reinforced with a central axial shaft, and the colony cylinder is attached to a mining asteroid which serves as a source of raw materials. Heliopolis is officially neutral territory, making it an attractive refuge for families like those of
Kira Yamato
and his friends who hope to avoid being drawn into the current conflict. However, Heliopolis has secretly been playing host to the
Atlantic Federation's
Gundam development project,
and thus lending support to the
Earth Alliance. |
| Jachin Due |
|
One of the two space fortresses that guard the
PLANT
homeland. Like its companion
Boaz,
Jachin Due is a former resource asteroid, which was converted into a defensive base after
ZAFT
forces repulsed an
Earth Alliance
fleet in its vicinity on April 17, C.E. 70. The asteroid's thick rock walls make it an ideal military facility, capable of surviving anything short of an all-out nuclear attack.
The name Jachin is borrowed from one of the two pillars of Solomon's temple, while Due is the Italian word for the number two. |
Joint Supreme Headquarters Alaska (JOSH-A) |
|
Pronounced "Joshua," this immense underground base is the central headquarters of the
Earth Alliance
forces. As its name indicates, JOSH-A is located in
Alaska,
at the northwest extremity of the
Atlantic Federation's
territory. |
| Junius Seven |
|
The
PLANT
which was destroyed in the infamous
Bloody Valentine
incident. The seventh of the Junius City PLANTs, it was converted into an agricultural production facility in C.E. 69, in order to help the PLANTs attain self-sufficiency by growing their own food. On February 14, C.E. 70, three days after the outbreak of war between the PLANTs and the
Earth Alliance,
the Alliance forces struck at their enemies' food supply by launching a nuclear attack on Junius Seven. In the wake of this so-called Bloody Valentine, the tragedy of Junius Seven became a rallying cry for the
ZAFT
forces. The remains of the PLANT itself drifted away from their original position at
Lagrange point
5, and have now become part of Earth's orbiting
Debris Belt.
On March 10, C.E. 72, representatives of the PLANTs and the nations of Earth gather at the remains of Junius Seven to sign the
Junius Treaty
that officially brings the war to an end. Ironically, these remains later play a key role in the
Break The World
incident that triggers a new war the following year.
|
| Kaohsiung |
|
A city on the island of Taiwan, part of the territory of the
Republic of East Asia,
which is the site of one of the
Earth Alliance's
major spaceports.
ZAFT
attacks Kaohsiung on January 15, C.E. 71, as part of its ongoing
Operation Uroboros
campaign, and the city falls eight days later. |
| Lorentz Crater |
|
A crater on the far side of the moon where
ZAFT
established its own lunar base earlier in the war. On May 3, C.E. 70, ZAFT began an offensive against the
Earth Alliance's
Ptolemaeus Lunar Base,
using the Lorentz Crater as a staging area. This campaign ended with the battle at the
Endymion Crater
on June 2, C.E. 70, after which ZAFT withdrew from the moon and abandoned its lunar bases. |
| Mahamul |
|
The site of a
ZAFT
base at the northern end of the Persian Gulf. The Mahamul base was established in preparation for an attack on the
Earth Alliance
stronghold at Suez, and is commanded by an officer named
Joachim Ruddle.
|
| Mendel |
|
A
space colony
located at
Lagrange point
4, named after the pioneering genetic theorist Gregor Mendel. The construction of Mendel began around C.E. 30, and the colony went on to host many of the genetic engineering companies and businesses involved in
Coordinator
production, such as
GARM R&D.
Mendel was abandoned in C.E. 68 following the outbreak of a lethal biohazard, after which the entire colony was sterilized via X-ray irradiation. Although many of the space colonies at Lagrange point 4 were damaged or destroyed during the current war, the uninhabited Mendel colony has remained relatively intact. |
| Nova |
|
A resource satellite controlled by the
Republic of East Asia,
and located at
Lagrange point
4. On June 14, C.E. 70,
ZAFT
began an attack on the asteroid which continued for almost a month, destroying most of the L4
space colony
cluster. The
Earth Alliance
abandoned Nova on July 12, and the asteroid was subsequently transferred to the
PLANT
homeland at Lagrange point 5 and converted into the military base known as
Boaz. |
| Onogoro |
|
One of several islands in the archipelago which makes up the
Orb Union.
Onogoro is controlled by the Orb military and by the
Morgenroete
munitions company, and its high-security facilities are protected even from satellite surveillance.
The name Onogoro is derived from an island in Japanese mythology. |
| Panama |
|
The isthmus which connects Central and South America. This is the location of the Panama Canal that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as one of the
Earth Alliance's
major spaceports. The Panama spaceport is the site of the
Porta Panama
mass driver,
jointly developed by the
Atlantic Federation
and the
United States of South America,
which was seized by the former at the beginning of the war. As one of the Alliance's last remaining spaceports, Panama is now an important strategic target for the
ZAFT
forces. |
Ptolemaeus Lunar Base |
|
The
Earth Alliance's
main lunar base, located in the Ptolemaeus Crater on the near side of the moon. Originally established by the
Atlantic Federation
in C.E. 35 to police the
space colonies,
this base now serves as the headquarters of most of the Alliance's space fleets, and as a staging area for their attacks on the
PLANT
homeland. |
| Suez |
|
A city in northeastern Egypt which is the site of a major
Earth Alliance
base. This base controls the Suez Canal that connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, and is now the main target of
ZAFT's
military operations in Eurasia. |
Talbadiya Factory District |
|
A former factory area in northern Africa. On February 28, C.E. 71, the
Archangel
fights a final battle here against the ground forces of
Andrew Waltfeld. |
| Tassil |
|
A town in the Libya region of northern Africa, which is the home of many of the
Desert Dawn
resistance fighters. Caves in the surrounding mountains are used to store weapons and provisions for the resistance.
On February 16, C.E. 71,
ZAFT
forces under the command of
Andrew Waltfeld
attack Tassil as an act of retaliation against Desert Dawn. |
| Victoria |
|
An
Earth Alliance
spaceport located on the shore of Lake Victoria in eastern Africa. The Victoria spaceport is the site of the
Habilis
mass driver,
which was jointly developed by the
Eurasian Federation
and the
South African Union.
This was the target of
ZAFT's
first orbital landing operation on March 8, C.E. 70, but this first
Battle of Victoria
ended with a ZAFT defeat due to inadequate ground support. By the start of C.E. 71, however, the battle lines between the Alliance-aligned South African Union and the
PLANT-controlled
African Community
have moved dangerously close to this strategic target. |
| White Symphony |
|
An abandoned theater at the
PLANT
known as Junius Five, which was the site of
Lacus Clyne's
first public performance. The White Symphony theater is now slated for demolition so that the land can be put to agricultural use. |
| Yggdrasil |
|
A fourth-generation international space station, its name borrowed from the world tree of Norse mythology, which was constructed at
Lagrange point 1. The construction of Yggdrasil began during the last years of the A.D. calendar, resumed upon the conclusion of the
Reconstruction War
in C.E. 9, and was completed two years later. This space station came under attack early in the current war, and was destroyed during a fierce battle between
ZAFT
and
Earth Alliance
forces on February 22, C.E. 70. |
| ZAFT Military Station |
|
A large cylindrical space station in the
PLANT
homeland which serves as the headquarters and command center of the
ZAFT
forces. This military station is surrounded by dozens of floating docks for use by ZAFT warships. |
| Zodiac |
|
A research
colony
located at
Lagrange point 5.
When
George Glenn,
the first
Coordinator,
returned from Jupiter in C.E. 29, this colony was chosen to host the investigation of the extraterrestrial fossil known as
Evidence 01
Zodiac's extraterrestrial research organization soon grew into space's largest research facility, and the colony became a thriving center for space science. Its legacy is carried on by the
PLANT
settlements which now populate Lagrange point 5, and by the Zodiac Alliance - now known as
ZAFT
- which was created to fight for the economic and political independence of the PLANTs. |
